Kindergarden - 5th Grade
One of our unique events at Cataldo is our Just Dance Contest, held during Catholic Schools Week as the culmination of our rhythm & dance unit. Every cougar has the opportunity to participate in the fun, watch the other performances, wear their themed free dress and receive a treat after their dances. We have some specialty awards that we give out , in addition to selecting overall winners from each grade band (and no, the oldest group doesn't always win!). Part of what we will be helping the kids learn is that we might not always win, but that we can still have fun and be happy for other people. We also explain that it is okay to be nervous/anxious/disappointed and how to express those emotions in healthy ways. By the time the party's over, there are always smiles everywhere.
Grades Kindergarden - 5th will perform two songs and wear a themed costume/attire for the event. Students learn and practice dance routines over the course of the unit and demostrate their efforts by competing as an entire grade within their grade bands (primary K-2 and elementary 3-5), with fun judges, appearances by Lewis the Cougar, and a chance to win the grand prize of a class party with free dress!
Once our primary and elementary students receive their songs & themes, the real fun begins! We do not require families to make any purchases for the event or regulate how you do the costume beyond providing the theme and reminding families to keep it appropriate. Beyond that...costumes & outfits can be made from things at home, you can purchase something if you want to (or you're like me and not very crafty lol), reuse a halloween costume - once we give the theme we usually let families and room parents get creative.
Parents are absolutely invited to come watch their kids and we will have a schedule of performances as we get closer to the event. We will also record their performances for anyone who can't get away to watch! We do try to livestream it, but be aware that weather and internet service can impact the stream.
Middle School Competition
Each year the Cataldo music and HPE programs collaborate to teach a rhythm & fitness unit accordance with our Diocese, State and National HPE Standards. The unit assessment project is an annual Just Dance Contest, held during Catholic Schools Week. The contest is open to all middle school students who want to participate in the school wide festivities and compete for prizes but is only required for students currently taking an HPE class.
This year our middle school students (6th-8th grade) will have two options to complete their project and/or participate in the contest:
Option #1: Participate in the school wide festivities and form a group to compete in the in-person Just Dance Contest on Friday January 31st. Themed free dress will be allowed for students participating, but must be approved by Coach Gibson and Mrs. Solberg.
Option #2: Participate in the video contest by choosing two Just Dance songs to record yourself performing and submit them to Coach Gibson.
Note: For students not currently taking HPE, communication will be done via email instead of in the Google Classroom.
In-person Contest Guidelines
- Groups can be comprised of 2-6 students. The number of people in your group does not have to match the song. For example; if your video has 3 roles but you have 6 dancers, you can make two groups. You can also have multiple dancers doing a solo dance together.
- Each group will only perform one song, one a first come, first serve basis. Remember to check the lyrics for appropriate language and content. Your group must submit three choices in order of preference. Any group that just repeats the same song in each choice will have their choices screened last.
- Groups will come up with a team name and their own (appropriate) theme dress for their performance, to be approved by Coach Gibson and Mrs. Solberg. If you want to wear a costume for your performance that would be distractive in the classroom (such as a sumo suit, etc.), you will need to wait and change into it before your turn to perform.
Video Contest Guidelines
- Complete the this form with your theme, song submissions, and anyone that will be in your video with you. Once you've submitted the form, I will leave you a private comment in the Google Classroom approving your song choice and theme. Make sure to do this first!
- Practice your dancing and camera work multiple times before you submit! Have fun with it, get creative, make a music video...
- When you've completed and chosen your best videos of two different songs, attach them to the assignment in Google Classroom. You will attach two videos, one of each song.
Deadline to sign-up for this years Dance Contest is Friday, January 24th.
